Saturday 30 July - Community Stage - Crawley International Mela
In addition to a massive lineup of local and national urban musicians, vocalists and dancers, Saturday features a special production, a story from the ancient Indian tale The Ramayana, in which larger than life characters act out the plot in front of the stage, mixing with the audience. In this episode, called "Deception in the Forest", Surpanakha tells her brother Ravanna about Sita and her beauty. Ravanna plans with Maricha that he will assume the guise of a Golden Deer to capture Sita’s heart. The Golden Deer appears before Sita and she is captivated. She persuades Rama to capture the Golden Deer for her. Rama goes off in pursuit as Lakshmana stays back to protect Sita.
Dancers: Rama (Cid Shaha), Sita (Ni Madé Pujawati), Ravana (Kali Dass), Mareecha/Golden Deer/Hanuman (Graeme Clint), Surpanakha (Lucia Tong), Jatayu (Nick Goh), Lakshmana (Ayo Aloba).
Directed by Hi Ching. Check out the video at Youtube.
