Crawley Mela Association
Mela Festival 2009 was by all accounts our best ever, but 2010 looks even better. We expect another full weekend of family fun and activity with something for everyone but this is just the tip of the iceberg.
The Mela Association committee is also planning a range of community services around the year, including:
- Bigger Multifaith Parade midweek on July 15th, to allow full-scale involvement by local schools.
- More School and Community Outreach visits from multicultural artists - see the Outreach page for a current listing.
- Sports for all ages - Kabadi, kite flying, martial arts, Chi Gong, a new Crawley Open Volleyball league!
- Crawley Vision In Youth Collective will be playing a larger role, taking full control of the Community Stage programme and operation
- More Festival content - the always-popular Bhangra and Qawaali, and a special focus on North Africa, including colourful Flamenco, vibrant Rai and much more from Andalucia, Algeria, Morocco and Senegal.
New Community Stage programming for all
With a full parallel programme including classical Indian dance, Ghanaian drumming, Dohl, Bollywood, RnB and much more. Look around and you'll find workshops both outside and inside the Hawth, including Ghanaian drumming, Shiatsu massage, Arts and Crafts, Rongoli, Japanese calligraphy, Origami, story telling - the list goes on!.
And when it finally all gets too hot and noisy, there's a Chill-out Zone in the Footlight Room, an African Zone, or the Studio for fascinating glimpses in film of Indian history from the last century.
Once again, the Mela Committee have put together a glowing tribute to multi-cultural Crawley, based on the efforts of a small army of hard-working volunteers from our Hindu, Afro-Caribbean, Buddhist and Islamic communities, and delivered with no entrance charge, in keeping with our ancient Mela tradition of respect for all human life.

Small Business On Display

We welcome interest from businesses considering the potential benefits of a 'shopfront' visited by 10,000 people over the Mela weekend. This is a unique opportunity to bring small community businesses together with a varied West Sussex market for mutual benefit.
Priority is 'first come, first served' although preference may be given to two-day bookings and SMEs.
